Review

"Aptly titled A Poet's Life, this biography gives due attention to Levertov's work and the woman who wrote it."--Washington Times"This impressive study is the first complete biography of [Denise Levertov]."--Library Journal"This absorbing book is must reading for lovers of American literature, particularly by women, and contemporary poetry.  Essential."--Choice"Greene's admiration for, and empathy with, Levertov is clear throughout this very readable book."--The Tablet"Brings alive the writer's lifetime vocation as a 'celebrant of Mystery'. . . . Greene, who has written lives of other spiritual thinkers like Evelyn Underhill and Maisie Ward, shows from Levertov's private diaries and journals the close connection between her personal struggles, her poetic maturaltion and her spiritual transformation."--America Magazine"Greene has done us all a service with this much awaited and essential portrait of a major figure in American Literature. . . . Greene does a brilliant job of identifying this lifelong spiritual quest of Levertov as a central movement of her life, and connects these deep personal ties to family to the poems, thus revealing the life through the work and the work through the life. . . . Greene creates exactly the kind of biography that Levertov would have wanted--and we so needed."--New York Journal of Books

If you can buy or read only one biography of Denise Levertov, Dana Greene's biography is the one you should choose. From the very first page, when Greene shows us the twelve-year-old Denise stuffing her poems under the sofa cushions before mailing them to author/editor T.S. Eliot, to the final chapter when she describes Levertov's funeral, the book is filled with insights, and quotes from Levertov's poems, diaries and correspondence. It is truly a wonderful book. When I finished it, I did something I've never done before -- I immediately went back to the beginning and began to re-read it. I live near Seattle, and I also went to the Lakeview Cemetery on Capitol Hill to seek out Levertov's grave. This is a fine example of the biographer's art at its best. Greene is to be commended on both her scholarship and her prose style.

In his wager, Pascal advises those who would believe to take the holy water and adopt the external motions of faith, even when faith itself is absent. As Dana Greene suggests in her wonderful biography, poetry acted in a similar way on Denise Levertov. From the first absorbed by the mystery of ordinary existence, as evidenced in her verse,Levertov's primary wonder led her from doubt to belief. With delicacy, sensitivity, empathy, Dana Greene traces the intertwining threads that, however unorthodox and at times devious the path, led the poet from darkness and doubt to belief. Perhaps most commendable of all, this rich telling leads us forward to Levertov's luminous, inspired poems with greater appreciation and understanding.

I thought this book was very well researched and carried the integration of Denise' story with the poetry and the background for the poetry. Her story is one of authentic struggle with so many areas of her life and her relationships especialy with Mitch, her husband and her son, Nicoli... Her conversion to Christianity and Catholicism is remarkable....a search that enriched her life through her conversion and the power of that conversion on her poetry and her many relationships. I do not say "I love it." I say, "it was remarkably well written.

A scholarly work. Wonderful insights and comments on Levertov's poetry and spirituality. I especially liked the treatment of Levertov's conversion to catholicism, always claiming she is not a christian poet, but a poet who happens to be christian. Being a Jesuit, I was pleased to see that she was greatly influenced by the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. I'm rereading several chapters. Well worth the time.

It's ok, not great. Author needs to sink into the details more. The book should be twice the length that it is. For example, presentation of Levertov at the 1963 Vancouver Poetry Conference needs deeper exploration. A major event gets elided into a few pages of generality.

Denise Levertov, an English born poet, moved to the United States in 1948. She was the author of twenty-four volumes of poetry and by the time of her death in 1997, she had been nominated to be America's poet laureate. This was a well deserved honor. Denise's poetry reflected both her life experiences and the issues of the time she lived in. Small quotations of her poetry are woven into this thoughtfully written biography by Dana Greene.

Well worth reading.

Denise Levertov emerges as a person and a poet. Daughter and sister, wife and mother, lover and friend, fellow poet and teacher--she comes alive here in all of her triumphs and struggles due largely to Ms. Greene's research and writing skills but also to the detailed Levertov archives housed mainly at Stanford University where Levertov taught in her final years.Though the book is woefully short on photographs--10 to cover 74 years of life--we do get vivid personal descriptions of her such as this from her later years in Seattle: "Neighbors, friends, colleagues, students, fellow poets, and artists all came to her home where they were greeted with exuberance, shared in her bursts of full-bodied laughter, and were sent off with her signature Buddhist bow. Her gift in friendship was to share her endless curiosity and delight in the world. A rapid intake of her breath and a clasp of her hands were her signature responses."Though the chapters are clearly marked covering delineated periods of Levertov's life, at times Ms. Greene struggles with maintaining the details of chronology. Her flashing backward and forward is often confusing and annoying, as are some of the needless summarizing at the close of each chapter. Despite its 60 pages of "Notes" and "Selected Bibliography," this does not read like a dissertation, but rather an authoritative and intimate biography.
