This was a very well written story. The Author Nikki, who grew up in Florida, was best friends with her Grandfather, Poppy who taught her to love Birds, and how to care for them. Mainly love birds, but some other parrots as well. The birds became quite an obsession with her, to the point of Isolation at times.She gives us great detail on the care, breeding etc of the birds, which was interesting.On her Birthdays she and Poppy, had a tradition, which of course included a bird, a dove that they would release each year. She always asked him, “where does my birthday dove go†and he would reply, “She goes to the heavens, and becomes a star to watch over you when I cannot be there myselfâ€. I loved the thought of that tradition.The authors life is full of ups and downs from the joy that the birds and her Grandfather brought her, but also the lows of alcohol abuse, and low self esteem.She was a writer and after having won some money from a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts decides to go to Paris and visit The bird market her grandfather had always talked about. While there she learns a bit more about herself.
Unique, fun, challenged writer who battled a bad addiction and learned to make the tale interesting. I now look at birds in an entirely different way.Its as though Nikki opened their secret doors into their present but mysterious lives. I found this enchanting and I think others will too. Learn and live and travel and fall with Nikki and her flock. You will never fly the same way again.
Very original. So wonderful to learn about the life of a woman who loved birds so much that she would do almost anything to protect them. I loved reading about her grandfather. He was a very, very wonderful man. I remembered my grandfather and wrote a story about him. My younger cousins who never had the opportunity to know him, were grateful for my story.
As a bird lover and one who has raised many birds over the years. I naturally have a kindred to the species. This book was so on point about taking care of them and the addiction one has for more once you have that first bird.
This is a great book. It is well written and was quite an enjoyable read. I laughed, cried and everything in between while reading this book. I can't recommend it enough to anyone looking for a great memoir. Five stars just aren't enough.
Thoroughly impressed! Unequivocally a book I relate to, being raised by a grandparent who had ultimate respect 4 animals and birds.This is a lovely journey, well written and I must read again....
Whether you love birds as winged creatures or metaphors, this book delivers. A beautifully written redemptive story that touches on all the richness and heartache of life.
Having grown up knowing Nikki as a child and her Poppi living across the street from my family, this is a great memoir.
