From School Library Journal

Benefits gained from athletics are myriad, according to veteran psychologist Taylor (Positive Pushing: How To Raise a Successful and Happy Child). Physical health, self-mastery, resilience, social and relationship development, and all-around fun are some of the advantages detailed in this manual. Unfortunately, monied interests infused into sports broadcasting have created a celebrity lure that has contributed to parents being more concerned with fulfilling their own athletic dreams through their children. For instance, in 2016, a survey showed that 26 percent of parents believed their children would become professional athletes, creating an industry dubbed the "youth sports industrial complex" and resulting in overcompetition, burnout of youth athletes, and a loss of enjoyment. As a world-ranked alpine ski racer, black belt in karate, marathon runner, and triathlete who works with Olympic-level athletes, Taylor is distinctly qualified to teach parents how to direct their children toward healthy, positive sports experiences. VERDICT Solid, trustworthy advice for parents of athletes elementary age and up.-Julia M. Taylor, a renowned sports psychologist and successful athlete in his own right, offers this useful, modern guide for parents navigating the changing world of youth sports. He aims for “a deep and broad perspective on how to ensure that your children’s sports participation fosters nurturing experiences, encourages positive attitudes, and promotes their most healthy development, as both athletes and people, as they move toward adulthood.” Each chapter illustrates the path to athletic success through the development of values, a sense of self, and ownership and concludes with Taylor’s essential “do’s and don’ts for sports parents.” In today’s culture of specialization, traveling teams, and messages from the media that promise fame, money, and professional careers, Taylor believes that parents need more help than ever to make sure their children's athletic experiences are balanced, healthy, and, most of all, fun. This is an informative resource for any parent and a must-read for those with children already participating in the rewarding and challenging world of sports. I find this book very helpfull. I became one of those parents that live through their children and I did not realized until I started too loose sleep and constantly think about best ways to meke my children improve on their sport. This book was a salvation for my relationship with my kids and their athletic life.

This book should be a must for every sports parent. The current sports’ culture is difficult to navigate and this book will help you along the process. The book is rooted in psychological theory and evidence, however it is easy to read and provides many relatable examples. You will feel identified in many of those examples and there’s always a suggestion or a guide on how to manage those situations you have or will encounter as a sports parent. What I also like is that it’s not only a step-by-step guide on how to be a better sports parent, but it also invites you to reflect and consider your own circumstances, in order to find the best solution for the unique characteristics of your family. Each chapter offers research, evidence, examples and guidance on how to tackle the most common issues parents face throughout their kids sporting journey. And if this is not enough, the last chapter has a superb summary with do’s and don’ts that will empower you to raise your young athletes in the best possible way.

I was drawn to this book because 1) I am a youth sport parent and coach 2) I am also educated in sport psychology and was interested to see what this book had to say that was specific to working with young athletes. I can say that this book did not disappoint. While it was rooted in theory and evidence, it was also an easy and straightforward read that was applicable and relatable. While reading I could apply each scenario and lesson to my own life and consider all of the ways to best support my own children, athletes, and students. I was impressed by the ability of the author to maintain a conversational tone, while also presenting scenarios and giving suggestions and strategies that were based on research. Real world examples were given throughout and quotes from many well known athletes and coaches help to keep the reader's attention. I do not often take the time to review books or items on Amazon (although I know it can be very helpful!) but I am compelled to comment on this because I think that the content is so important for any parent that is trying to foster an optimal athletic experience for their child. it is imperative that parents understand the ramifications of many of the current views of youth sport (such as winning is everything and sport specialization from a young age) and keep the main goal of youth sport in the forefront of their minds - that their kids are learning, improving, developing as athletes and humans, socializing, and having fun. These goals can (and should!) be maintained at any competitive level. Thank you for giving parents and youth coaches this guidance!

Well laid out, easy to read, comprehensive guide for parents and coaches to help create young athletes who can grow to their full potential while loving the “play” of the sport. “Raising Young Athletes” is an excellent “How To” guide for the development of successful athletes. The skill sets presented cultivate opportunities for young athletes to apply the skills learned in sport as they grow into successful adults. In this book, Dr. Taylor provided an accurate representation of youth athletics, the benefits as well as the pitfalls. He addresses how to deal with negative situations as well as how to grow positive athletic experiences for individual athletes, for managing sports within a demanding family life, and how to promote enjoyable game day experiences for all involved. In “Raising Young Athletes”, Dr. Taylor shared his many years of expertise working with athletes, their families, and coaches at all levels of competitiveness. Whether you are a first-time sport parent (and/or coach) OR an experienced sport family, “Raising Young Athletes” provides a realistic, step by step guide with strategies that are easy to implement. “Raising Young Athletes” is an excellent read and an ideal gift for every sport parent and coach.
