This adaptation of the classic tune starts off with a familiar image—a child in a yellow slicker dancing around a light post in the rain. He continues to introduce his diverse cast of characters clad in bright rainwear with big umbrellas. They dance, splash and sing their way through a dark, rainy cityscape with pops of color (flower, worm, snail, a building, etc.) as yellow musical notes hang in the air. As the verse begins again, the children become airborne Mary Poppins—style and the scene transitions from city to rainforest. Now they dance, splash and sing their way through the rainforest—animals, waterfalls, lush vegetation, etc.—as their clothing subtly changes to reflect their location. The final line in the song sees them returning to the city amidst rain, musical notes, birds, and a bit of both landscapes. The evocative watercolor illustrations contain just the right amount of rainy darkness to heighten Hopgood's perfect and judicious use of color. VERDICT Catchy lyrics coupled with imaginative illustrations produces something completely new while paying homage to the source material. My 17-month son LOVES this book. We got it a couple of months ago and he still reaches out to it daily. He always has the biggest smile when I open this book and start to sing (and I'm not a great singer). He loves the illustrations and the song, and I really appreciate the vibe of being grateful and appreciative of nature and things we often don't pay attention to or even try to avoid like rain. It's a great reminder. I even find myself thinking about the message of the song last time I got caught in the rain. I also bought What a Wonderful World from the same "author" and this has become my son's favorite song of the moment. I truly feel lucky for finding these books, thank you Tim Hopgood!
We absolutely love the “wonderful world†book by the same illustrator, and were looking for other lyric-based children’s books. Singing in the rain is not a bad book, but not of the high quality as the other book. The illustrations are dark. I know it is raining in the story, but black and grey do not capture a baby’s attention like bright colors do. The song could have been slightly abridged to make it less repetive and a better story.
I saw this at our local library with my 2.5 year old daughter and was delighted since I grew up watching this musical. The drawings are beautiful and whimsical and my daughter loves pointing out things that she sees and has learned most of the words to the song. It's one of my favorite books to read/sing since I have a personal connection to it as well. Even if you don't, the lyrics are so pure and sends a sweet message. I bought one for my niece too!
This is a truly beautiful book. Such a lovely song, set to rich illustrations. It’s just a happy, positive book to have in your library and a wonderful spring read aloud. The diverse children in the book are clearly enjoying their time spent outside in nature, even in the rain. What a great message for kids.
Of course I love the musical, and it was so fun to sing it with my grandbaby. Love the creative illustrations, gives a new way of thinking about this song from a child’s perspective. This was part of our Kindermusik class. Rain happens, this is a great way to celebrate it instead of asking it to simply “go awayâ€.
My six year old read this to me in the best sing-song voice without ever hearing the song- just super cute with amazing illustrations.Super fun read with her grandma who loves the song and movie!
Amazing book!! I teach in a diverse area and representation is important. I love the children in this book! The pictures are beautiful, you won’t regret it. I like to show the “singing in the rain†dancing clip and then read the book, having students compare and contrast the video and the book.
