About the Author

In the summer of 2008 I was 13 years old, anxiously waiting to become an eighth grader and bored out of my mind one evening in the mountains of Appalachia. Without permission from my dad (I quickly learned that acting first and asking for forgiveness later has it’s benefits) I found a piece of aluminum suitable for smashing. A small stick fire was built and the aluminum started taking shape with the help of an old framing hammer. I soon discovered the wonder in flattening and shaping metal that would forever change the direction of my future. A few hours later, this time with the help of my father, we dug out a massive pit in the ground to build a larger wood fire in which I used to heat up my first piece of glowing red steel. I learned quickly how to use tongs…. I had already caught the bug, so we gathered and scrounged for the essential tools from around the house to start forging immediately. When I get a new idea or itch to do something, I have a tendency to do it right away, even if it means I don’t have the optimum set up. These keystone tools that went to build my future career would be the anvil, tongs, and hammer. The anvil used was an old ball hitch, hardly your best case scenario, but this weighed around 10 pounds and had a solid enough surface to hammer steel on. The tongs were vise grips reluctantly surrendered from my father’s tool box, and the hammer was an old claw framing hammer. Doesn’t sound too luxurious does it? Well I thought it was! All of this was expeditiously gathered and underway in one evening, without leaving the house. In the same day I went from becoming a bored 13 year-old to a fascinated up and coming blacksmith. All of this evolved into the current business and passion I have today. At the age of 19 I was fortunate enough to purchase a beautiful 10 acre plot of land outside of Boone, NC for the future site of Hoffman Blacksmithing to be constructed in spring of 2018. I’ve been able to teach private lessons to students from as far away as Australia, and create a career I wouldn’t have dreamed of when I started. Today, in the year 2017, I specialize in hand forged axes with the help of my team. Currently I’m 21 years old and excited to have bigger and better plans for the years to come, growing and transforming my craft and business.

I really, really wanted to like this book. I have great respect for Liam's craft and greatly enjoy watching his videos, but as some people have said here, this book is not for everyone, and ultimately it wasn't for me.The trouble is, I'm not sure who this book is for. From the Amazon summary, it seems geared at beginners (which I am) and intermediate blacksmiths, but the beginner will find only limited amount of actionable material, and the intermediate will find it much too basic (and obviously, it is of no interest to professional blacksmiths).I want to give credit where it's due, there is plenty of good general advice that will apply to learning any new skill, and sprinkled here and there is actual useful guidance on blacksmithing that is actually useful to a beginner (for instance, the little section on ergonomics, stance, grips etc. is nice).About a third of the book is dedicated to descriptions of tools & equipment. This may sound like great beginner material in theory but as others have said, this is not a big book, and there are many tools to describe, so this results in very basic descriptions and little useful information that one wouldn't easily find otherwise (or more likely, already know). Similarly, the section on types of steels is extremely succint (it would seem difficult to say less). There is a small chapter on safety but here too I don't feel I've gotten much that isn't obvious or widely known (some good advice about gloves though). In fact I'm so used to being strongly lectured about safety that the attempt in the book felt somewhat half-hearted. (Liam has said he was interested in talking about the philosophy of blacksmithing rather than the specific techniques used for specific projects; ie, this is not a how-to book -- I really feel this was a missed opportunity to explore the systematic mindset of safety and its converse: beginners' fear of the tools, there was so much more to say!)Beyond this, the book's main points seem to be that1) you can't buy skills by buying tools, no matter how much money you throw at it2) you don't need expensive tools, amazing work can be done with a hand file3) you don't want expensive tools (at first), it'll prevent you from learning4) practice (targeted), be willing to fail, own it, persevere5) struggling for space in a tiny shop is good?I won't argue those points, I think most of them are fair and good (though I'm not particularly convinced by #5), but once more, although generally good advice, this isn't particularly useful of actionable for someone who hasn't waited to read this book before getting started.Perhaps I'm wrong and this book IS aimed at beginners, or rather, pre-beginners: an answer to the unlikely question "I have no idea what blacksmithing implies but I love your work and now I want to be a blacksmith too, what tools should I buy to make the same knives you make? Also, I don't know how to learn a new skill, any advice?". Perhaps Liam's fame has exposed him to too many people with this mindset, and perhaps he felt the need to address it in this book? This could have been a really good book, but in the opinion of this reader, it would have needed:- A smaller font and margins: the book has twice as many pages as it needs for the content that's in it, it feels more like an 80 pages book, even if you left all the photos in).- 3 times as many pages: every chapter feels way too short: even when there are actual insights, the pace jumping from tool to tool and PPE to PPE is so fast that they don't have any time to sink in.- A lot more actionable material: After reading this book, I'm not quite sure what to actually do, or change in my practice... which are the foundational techniques I should focus on, and so on. I'm left with a vague sense of "work hard, practice everything".- A lot more discussions of specific techniques and technical aspects of the craft, the materials, the processes, their pros and cons: each of these has the potential to be a page or a chapter instead of a paragraph (or sometimes a sentence), and together have a chance to actually "answer the most simple yet complex and thought inducing questions confronted by anyone getting started in blacksmithing".I do feel that the Amazon summary (from which the above quote was taken) was somewhat misleading. "This IS the book for anyone starting blacksmithing, or even for someone already at an intermediate skill level." seems just wrong. I could possibly see an argument for extreme beginner audiences who don't yet know *anything* about blacksmithing (which, if they're interested in becoming a blacksmith, seems unlikely), but actual beginners and intermediate blacksmiths alike will struggle to find valuable insight in these pages. As others said, color photography would have been nice at the price this book sells for, but I would have settled for the above.

He goes into perfect detail if you're serious about coming a blacksmith, and you have the means (money) saved up to do so. he includes the differences in prices of machinery and supplies as well as step-by-step instructions on where to go, what it costs, why its needed/ suggested, as well as everything in between. Hoffman is not only an excellent, skilled and amazing blacksmith, but also an amazing writer as well. He makes a confusing/ intimidating career, into a doable less threatening one.More of a career book than a hobby book. but it works wonderfully for whatever you're looking for. Answered all my questions.

Liam has done a great job providing important information for the new blacksmith. Liam covers important safety (Forging is inherently dangerous!) and provides a good path for the beginner to choose what they need and more importantly what they really don't need to begin this rewarding craft. I knew him from his YouTube videos before I knew he was a Forged in Fire champion. His work is AMAZING (favorite is the A Chef's Dream knife...out of this world!) and so just by virtue of his projects I have seen, I wanted to know what he knows. So read the book to get started, but then check out the videos to get inspired!

Liam Hoffman has a very down to earth way of writing. Coming from someone who has no past experience in working metal, Liam breaks it down to the vitals. I could even see how experienced blacksmiths could benefit from this read. This book is full of essential advice for starting out. I have a bucket of scrap metal that I can’t wait to heat up and hammer on!!

Absolute must must-have for a newbie blacksmith like myself. It's very well written and I really appreciate the tips from Liam printed in bold text so you can't miss them. It's the kind of book that will be on the shelf not far from my Anvil full of Post-it notes and dog-eared pages. The best book I've read on blacksmithing by far. Thanks Mr. Hoffman!!

Solid foundation in blacksmithing. Really lays lot what is needed and what isn't for a beginner. This a beginners book, no doubt. I hope Liam puts together some advanced writings in the future

I loved how easy of a read this book was, while at the same time providing me tons of useful information to help me get started in forging! The information contained herein can get ANYONE started in the art, and is a must-read for those of us who started without having a mentor or guidance from an experienced blacksmith.

Liam is one of the most talented smiths I have met. Although he is young he has developed his craft to a very high degree through talent and determination. Liam cuts through the nonsense and gives the beginning smith a clear path to acquire the tools and skills that matter in order to quickly deliver quality work. You will save the cost of this book many times over by avoiding wasted time and money on things that don't matter. Highly recommend!
