Frank Van Lunteren has written another great book about the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He has skillfully taken battle logs and created an architecture with which to overlay 504 veterans first hand accounts along with actual citations for awards for bravery in creating a superior account of the regiments actions in the Battle of the Bulge and specifically in it's fight again Kampfegruppe Pieper. In two books Frank has told me more about my father in the Second World War than he ever even tried. I know why now.....it was a horrible experience......

This is the first book I've read that was authored by Frank. I happened to stumble across Frank several years back while doing internet research on a family friend who was in the 504th and was killed during the Battle of Cheneux. Frank helped me find information I would have never been privy to without his help. Fast forward to this book...I had been waiting for it's release for quite some time and was not disappointed when I finally got a copy. Speaking for the family of Cpl. Stevenson, if it weren't for the meticulous research done by Frank, there would still be dozens of families out there with unanswered questions about their loved ones and nowhere to turn for answers. If you're a fan of WW2 history, buy this book. You won't regret it.

The 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment gets kind of "passed over' in many Bulge accounts. It was nice to read this account, but the author skimped on Kampggruppe Peiper. The Uberfurher of this band of murderers and miscreants should have been given a bullet to the back of his skull when captured. Peiper was responsible for the massacre at Malmady (along with the Italian Boves Massacre). Not only was this creep responsible for the cold-blooded killing of 84 American soldiers, but he was convicted of other war crimes. However, he escaped prosecution by Italian and German courts with "insufficient evidence" being the reason given. Google this slimeball to read more of his atrocities. He did time for 12 years, eventually working for Porsche and Volkswagen. Somebody finally gave the American soldiers justice when he was murdered in 1976. Unfortunately, the author hardly mentioned the Massacre at Malmady! The 504 performed valiantly, even though they were often outgunned and outnumbered. One reviewer said there was a propensity of names used in the book that hampered readability. I would concur: I half expected a page that would be written, "First Cook's Mate [Elmer G.] Fudd from Nately, AR nearly missed the action when he couldn't find Sgt. [Foghorn] Leghorn's from Chickenbutt, AL favorite pot, and PFC [Dudly] Dewryte from Toadspit, IA had to go back to get his spats before joining the action." But in the author's defense, I believe he felt this group was deserving of more recognition than they had to date received. Since many of his information came from interviews with participants and/or their families, he wanted to give them recognition. I enjoyed reading it, and would read it again.

While I can appreciate the research that went into this book, I found it not particularly readable or informative. Students of the Battle of the Bulge-and I am one--will find very little to add perspective to the battle. The book consistently lacks a broad overview to give the reader a feel for where the action is taking place and what its larger importance is.Kampfgruppe Peiper played a significant part in the opening days of the fighting, yet the author gives us very little detailed reporting on how it came into being, who Peiper was and, ultimately, how American forces regrouped and stopped it. The largest oversight is in spending pages on minor infantry attacks and lists of medals awarded at the expense of failing to describe the importance of the 291 Engineer Combat Battalion, which was instrumental in finally stopping Peiper cold.A better overall book, in my view, is Snow and Steel by Peter Caddick-Adams. Excellent large unit overview with enough of the human detail to express the suffering American forces endured.

This book was another one reminiscent of Company Commander, in that it gives a straight-line view of a part of the Battle of the Bulge. BOTB books can be almost impossible to follow because so much happened at one time, that you can't keep track of the sequence of events. Books that zero in on one groups efforts and actions may not tell the entire story, but what they tell is comprehensible. I've read numerous books on the bulge, but this was still fresh and instructive.

Basically just a report on the people in the outfit that won medals and what there citations we for. Rather dry reading. Not very exciting

Not my cup of tea. More about people than I was expecting. I would have liked more battle over view.

Well written in the chronological order that books should be written. I'm glad to hear about the 82nd ABD. Most books are about the101st ABD , and they won the war all by themselves. At last the other side of he story has been told.
