I knew dePaola from my childhood (Strega Nona) but have never read this book. I bought it for my daughter (nearly 3) who loves being read to and then just looking at books. Typically after a few read through or two she'll take a book off by herself and flip through, narrating the story (as she remembers it) as she goes. This book is fantastic for that reason as the pictures are well-done, very endearing, and tell the story as well as the words do.

For Halloween this year we decided to make my 6 year old a knight and my almost 2 year old a dragon. We're big fantasy nerds so they really enjoyed the romanticism of it. We wanted to compliment their costumes with this book and we're very happy that we did! It's a story about a Knight learning how to fight a Dragon and a Dragon learning how to fight a Knight. What happens when they meet is cute and fun. If your kids like fantasy or feel good kids stories this is an excellent route to go!

The picture book has a great message. A knight and a dragon are learning to fight each other (because historically that is what their ancestors have done). In order to learn the necessary skills, they each do research by reading books! Yay books! The princess is the librarian. Yay librarians! In the end... *spoiler alert* the knight and the dragon work together to open a restaurant and, you guessed it, the librarian helps by providing books on the subject! Tomie De Paola knocks it out of the park, again! Yay Tomie de Paola!

My almost-4-year-old son loves this book. He's interested in knights and fighting, like many little boys. We laugh and laugh at the silly things that happen to the knight and dragon as they try to fight and fail. As a parent I appreciate a book that doesn't glorify fighting, but still acknowledges that children are facinated by the knights of old who fought with swords and lances, and plays with that interest. Don't look for lectures on fighting, or serious displays of sword technique. This one is just for giggles.

This is a really cute book. It has very few words so the children have to figure out what is happening. It has a very nice ending. *Spoiler: The dragon and the night go into business together (a BBQ Restaurant). VERY cute!!!! And I always LOVE Tomie dePaola's artwork. :)

This isn't a read-to, but is sort of a read-with, and actually is a look-at-it-and-make-it-up-as-you-go-along.The author helps us get started by establishing a knight who has never fought a dragon and a dragon who has never fought a knight. He tells us that they plan to have a joust, and sends them both to the library to read up on knight-dragon fighting. From there on, for the remaining 24 pages, apart from a few "meanwhiles" we have to supply all of the words and figure out and decide what's happening. And that works great. There are a number of books coming out recently that consist of illustrations that are open to interpretation, on pages that are formatted for a kid to actually write in his own story. This book doesn't go that far. But, there's lots of room to create different versions of the story every time you go through this book, and it presents a wonderful opportunity for a creative reading and imagining session. There are lots of little jokes and bits around the edges of the illustrations, so you could also have fun just pointing out those to each other. You know, after a long day I don't know if I'd pick this as the bed-time book. But, if your little reader is in the mood and if you're in the mood, and if there's just a bit of silliness in the air, this book could be a lot of fun.

I was disappointed when I first read the book as there is little text. However, after going through it several times, I am truly delighted with it and can't wait to read it with my grandson. The illustrations are too clever and charming for words, perfect for engaging a child in the story and in some elementary medieval culture. I am going to order another copy or two for friends who have grandchildren .... or children.

Tomie de Paola books were a staple of my childhood and now that my friends are having children, I get to be the dope auntie with all the good books! The Knight and the Dragon is so sweet, and great for non-readers as the story is mostly pictures, and *SPOILER* I like how both the knight and the dragon eschew society's expectations of them in the end :)
