If it wasn't for the twist ending there'd be nothing extraordinary about this book. The addition of the Cthulhu mythos is barely a factor; more like flavorless garnish on a boiled potato meal. If this product didn't have Gaimen's name on the cover I seriously doubt it would receive the ratings it has received. Cult of celebrity affords a significant berth of forgiveness I guess.

This graphic novel is based on a *brilliant* short story. How good? Gaiman's original story this graphic novel is based on won the 2004 Hugo Award for Best Short Story — no small feat! So if you are a fan of Neil Gaiman, Sherlock Holmes, and Lovecraft's Mythos and you haven't read either the short story or this new graphic novel yet, you are in for areal treat. I've probably read "A Study in Emerald" a dozen times over the years, and I was a little bit concerned that it might be difficult to pull off in this format, but I really thought the graphic novel was fantastically well executed. — No spoilers, but a few points worth mentioning. You do not have to be a massive Sherlock Holmes fan to appreciate this comic, but at least a passing familiarity with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's work is really essential to get the most out of it. The short story and thus the graphic novel are essentially part of a mystery that *you* as the reader should try to puzzle out as you read through it. And, as with all good mysteries whatever you do, DON'T read any spoilers in advance.

If I could I would give 4 1/2 stars. Neil does it again weaving together a great tale that plays with your expectation. This adaptation faithlly retreats the original short story with great art. My only complaint is the depiction of Queen Victoria. In the short story I pictured her as this massive monster covered in shadows, not the human sized represtation we see here. But that’s a small complaint for what is otherwise a fantastic tale. If you are a fan of Sherlock, lovecraft, or mystery this is a must read!

Well this was interesting. It's rather what I expected, I suppose, with a twist that I did not see coming, and which I very much liked. And it's worth at least two reads.It's a convergence of three things with which I am already familiar, and which I enjoy: H.P. Lovecraft, Neil Gaiman and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. The story and dialog are every bit as good as you would expect from Gaiman, the side color is interesting too. The Lovecraft/Conan Doyle mashup is well done, and interesting.OK. It's a convergence of four great things really, but one was new to me. The artwork is very good, I like the layouts and the style, and I get a new artist to follow up. I feel like I should already know about Rafael Albuquerque, but hey, happy to learn something new.

Look, here's all that I need to say: Neil Gaiman writes a story mixing Sherlock Holmes and the Cthulhu Mythos.Not sold? Really?Great Old Ones in charge of the British Empire while a gentleman detective and his former military companion investigating a grim case in the midst of it all doesn't draw you in?Let me add that it's a dazzling short story, full of twists and brilliant logical leaps - all told elegantly in this graphic novel form by a team that shows admirable restraint rather than plunging into the blood and madness one might indulge in with a HP Lovecraft-inspired setting.I shall spoil nothing, because the less you know about the story itself the better, just be prepared for something wonderful.

Years ago I finally broke down and started reading Gaiman's Sandman series, thinking "Yeah, there's no way it could POSSIBLY be as good as they hyped it to be." Well, I was wrong, it was better, and ever since then I've been a huge fan of his. So as soon as I heard about this, I bought it. No disappointment here either. A great read and an amazing twist at the end. Well worth the price of admission!

Beautifuly done!Starting as a standard Sherlock Holmes story (hinted at with the title itself) and adding twist upon twist until the very end and the last twist when you wish to read it again and ask yourself how come you didn't get it the first time...The only thing I can object to is that it is rather short (some 70 pages of the actual story) but hopefully this is a beginning of series...Recommending it to all Sherlock Holmes fans.

Following the detective and his assistant, we get to see a world where monarchs are ruled by The Ancient Ones. This story felt like the best kind of fanfic: it weaves two stories together where a reader can feel quite familiar yet still have moments of surprise. It's a pretty short tale so I won't go in-depth.One last thing: the twist at the end, while not being the craziest thing in the world, was a really awesome twist in this dark reality.

What I loved most about Empty Mansions was the history. As interesting & puzzling as it may be to have an elderly lady happily living in a hospital by choice, the history of the family, trying to imagine owning paintings by artists from whom you almost exclusively, see reproductions, is a world unto itself.Then there was Huguette. What I found sad was the way the hospital hit her up for cash, yet made fun of her eccentricity. By all accounts, she was a kind person. She may have been eccentric, yet she did not abuse anyone who came in to contact with her, and by all accounts, she did provide for those she cared about.Empty Mansions does raise questions on ethics, whether it be the lawyer, accountant, the hospital... Even her own relatives who challenged her will. I was glad to see an investigation to determine whether elder abuse had occurred—under the circumstances, it makes complete sense. That said, I was angered by the greed of her family... If one can use that term at all.In the end, while we never receive concrete answers about how/why Ms. Clark was so isolated, it's almost beside the point. Perhaps most fascinating is this one woman outliving her family by an extraordinary number of years. At nearly 105 at the time of her death, she saw more of history than most people. While I'd have loved to see a diary or journal of some kind to possibly understand Huguette's mindset, as an artist myself, the mystery is also part of the beauty. Nothing is necessarily clean & wrapped in a bow. We can choose to interpret the words on the page in multiple ways. I can't help but imagine that although her privacy was violated following her death, in the end, her story is that of an artist, through & through. Much is still left to the imagination, a world we may create. Perhaps that is the true gift the authors deliver to the readers, as well as Huguette in the end.

This book is well researched and spans the lives of W. A. Clark, his second wife, Anna, and their surviving daughter Huguette. It is an inside look at the making and spending of an inconceivable fortune. It is also introduces the reader to the fairy-like, in many ways, Huguette who lived her life as she chose to live it.Yes, she was very generous to those she cared about, and to some charitable causes. However, she could have done so much, to better the world, with the millions she gave to her private nurse, doctors who were, IMO, taking advantage of Huguette's fears, and eccentricities.At the end of reading, I don't feel sad for Huguette. She isolated herself so that she didn't have to deal with anything that might make her feel uncomfortable or sad. She only wanted to think about things that were beautiful, things that made her happy to do. In that sense, she seemed selfish and immature.I think that Huguette Clark's life disproves the adage that, "Money can't buy happiness." I believe that she was absolutely content with the restricted world she created, no matter how stunted it was. I did not find myself admiring Huguette, despite her generosity to those with whom she was loyal.

EMPTY MANSIONS will surely climb the best-seller list. The book about Huguette Clark, heir to an enormous fortune and mistress of several large, poetically empty properties, is easy to fall into and harder to remove oneself from. Although not an especially interesting person, Huguette is fascinating on the written page mostly for what she didn't do in life, rather than what she did. Huguette doesn't fall into those categories. Once comfortable financially, Clark displayed his wealth in rather ostentatious manners such as the building of the Clark mansion in New York City, an intriguing but rather short-lived folly.The second story within the book is really the story of Huguette's mother, Anna. As W.A. Clark's second wife, she bore him two children, but never had the status or respect in society that she may have desired. Anna seemingly lived for her daughters and when the elder one, Andree, died, she and Huguette became inseparable. During this period, however, the two did make use of their wealth through traveling, collecting art, and buying and furnishing houses. For readers who liked THE SECRET LIFE OF THE LONELY DOLL by Jean Nathan, the story of author Dare Wright and her mother, Huguette's life might prove similarly intriguing; the difference, of course, being that Dare Wright was creative while Huguette was . . . .well, Huguette.The third story in EMPTY MANSIONS is the story of the hard-to-understand Huguette and an outline of the last twenty years of her life. Suffering from skin cancer, she hid inside her grand New York apartment and put off going to the doctor's. When she finally called for one, she was admitted to the hospital and then, most curiously, never left. At the time she entered the hospital, Huguette had two very large New York apartments, a huge mansion on the coast of California, and a spacious country estate in Connecticut. There was plenty of money for Huguette to live as she pleased or to donate to charities she deemed worthy. After having her cancer treated and being proclaimed healthy, Huguette chose to remain in the hospital and live there for two decades until she died at age 104. The last section of EMPTY MANSIONS changes in tone a bit as the reader is thrust into the present day and reads about court cases still going on in 2013. All of the sensational newspaper headlines of the past few years telling the story of Huguette Clark flash by, page after page, as the reader puzzles over the ethics of doctors and nurses accepting large monetary presents from their patient and of accountants and lawyers whose roles in Huguette's affairs may have been questionable.But above all, whatever else EMPTY MANSIONS is about, it leaves the reader pondering whether Huguette was merely sheltered and shy or whether she was emotionally immature or suffered from a mental illness. It does appear that her life would have been quite different if her mother had lived longer, if her sister hadn't died, or if she had a mother figure in her life to guide and direct her. As it turns out, her nurse, Hadassah Peri, may have emerged as just that figure. All that makes the story of Huguette and her money a most captivating read.EMPTY MANSIONS is the perfect book for a long weekend at the seashore in the rain, for a few days snowbound in the mountains in a snug, warm cabin in winter, or for taking along on a cruise. No one will regret reading EMPTY MANSIONS as there is something to be learned about American history, wealth, and yes - about loneliness.

As a Montanan I found this a wonderful and enlightening read. Here in our state we have copious amounts of the historical doings of the Copper Kings as well as the physical remnants of that time. However there is little that tells us of their posterity and surely Hugette Clark is among the most interesting. As I walk the streets of Butte I will remember "Hug". Columbia Gardens is only a memory, unfortunately but the mine heads still stand to remind us of the days when copper made kings. If you have never visited Butte/Anaconda area, you should put it on your bucket list. But go after boning up on the history. It was one of the most fascinating periods in Montana history. The city has been named as a historical site. And there is much to explore. This book was well researched and well written and should be part of your 're-visit research.

An excellent text that covers the current state of dinosaur science. Excellent as an introduction to science in general, and dinosaurs/ prehistoric life in particular. Not perhaps for the geology/paleontology undergrad, but definitely not a pop-up book!

This book provides excellent scientific information easily understandable to those just trying to understand dinosaurs and serious students. Highly recommended.

The book has been revised to include updates in MINIX, which started out as a v 7 unix clone for a floppy-disk only 8088. It is now aimed at 386, 486, and pentium machines and is based on the international posix standard instead of on v7. There are now also versions of MINIX for the Macintosh and SPARC available. Great book, highly recommend.The prerequisites, in my opinion, for reading this book is a basic knowledge of C and assembly, particularly, if you want to read through the source code in the back of the book. However, the book does such a phenomenal job in explaining everything within the text that it is not necessary to read through the source code. All parts of the text contain references to the actual source code, specifying line numbers of the source code, which makes it easy to read a paragraph, see its implementation in source code, read the next paragraph/pages, etc.This book is specific to Minix 3 which is a microkernel OS, contrasting it with Linux & Windows, for example, which are monolithic/hybrid OSs. Minix 3, as presented in this book, is also simplified by being single-threaded.A CD comes with it which contains the Minix 3 OS for use.I had previously read Modern Operating Systems & Computer Networks by the same author. This is a very good author and I very highly recommend his books.I wish this author would write a book on virtualization as well.

This book does a very good job at walking the reader through the various functions of MINIX, but it does not go into the specifics very well. In short, it is a good technical book, but it is not one I recommend for an introduction to Operating Systems, since it glazes over many things. So while I had a good grasp of how MINIX operates, I had little knowledge on how to add more to the OS, or how to write my own OS.While MINIX was a good choice for the text, as MINIX is an operating system written to be understood, I just think the authors could gone much more in detail. A strong grasp of C is also required, so make sure you know your stuff before reading this book.

I found the book to be a good read and didn't tire me unlike some other technical books. Tanenbaum's mastery of the subject is evident and he interweaves practical examples throughout the text that really help understand the concepts he is explaining. The book is thorough and informative, and it helped me to understand some of the details that weren't discussed in class.

My grandson requested this book. He is a junior in high school. I thought that it would be a good selection as he always seems to have his eyes glued to a computer screen. He started paging through it as soon as he opened the package. He made up a gift suggstion list with links for his "not-so-savvy with computer" grandparents. I was savvy enough to get it ordered, wrapped, and under the Christmas tree.

AST rulz, hands down! For many years I had this book on my nightstand. Although operating systems have evolved from the times this book was written, all the fundamental concepts are exposed and explained here with the finest didactic from Professor Tanenbaum. With his characteristic humor-driven writing style and his hands on examples, the author carries the reader through all the main aspects of a modern operating system. Keep in mind that this book was written in a time when personal computers ran very simplistic OSs.

This is the ONLY book that contains actual code for OS.Another choice to learn the code is "OS Concepts" by Silberschartz and Galvin, but the codes are much shorter.Many people prefer "Modern OS" (book by the same author) to this book, due to the short amount of actual text."Modern OS" certainly have goes deeper and has better logical flow, but it doesn't contain actual code.On the other hand, "OS Design and Imp" has shallow treatment, but show actual code.It is shallower, but it still contains all essential materials (thread, memory, file system, I/O, deadlock, and security)VERY good textbook to learn both theory and implementation together!

This is review for me as I have been through two courses in Operating Systems, but I would say this book would be a great introductory text for the uninitiated. It is well written and accessible, and there is source code to follow along with that demonstrates key concepts.

Tanenbaum has been a hero of mine since I first bought one of his books back ~1980. This edition of his OS book also includes his very functional, very workable precursor to Linux, eminently suitable for experimentation. I highly recommend *anything* by this gifted author. (I just hope his classes are half as good.)

This is hands down the best of the series and my favorite so far. The couple, Nadiah and Rast, were both introduced in earlier books. Nadiah is the cousin of Sylvan the Blood Kindred warrior of book two. Even as a young girl in book two she is fair, strong-minded, and doesn't share the prejudices of her parents against Tranq Prime descendants who are not of a "pure" Tranq Prime bloodline. She greatly admires her Kindred cousin and wants to marry a Kindred warrior of her own someday. Unfortunately, her parents blood-bonded her to a pure-blood Tramq Prime male when she was only six years old. Her fiancé Y'dex is a cruel, petty man who views Nadiah as a possession that he can control. Rast is a former police detective. In the preceding book Found he is not a likeable character, but even though he and Nadiah don't get along, there is an underlying attraction. Nadiah, now grown, is visiting the KIndred Mother Ship and is a participant in her cousin's wedding. Her parents fiancé are pressuring her to return to her home planet for her formal claiming. Her fiancé is pressuring her by exerting excruciating pain through the psychic blood bond, and finding pleasure in causing her agony. Rast has now accepted and acknowledged Nadiah's gift of the Sight, and their relationship is no longer antagonistic. He finds out that a champion can challenge a fiancé in some type of competition to break Nadiah's blood bond to Y'dex, although in the past history of her planet only a Kindred warrior has proven strong enough to break a blood bond. Rast is from Earth. The story travels from the Kindred Mother Ship to the planet of Tranq Prime, then to the Kindred First World. There are many twists and turns to the plot and the story definitely keeps you engaged. The only flaw I found in the story is a minor one: in the last book Rast held a low opinion of Nadiah and his contempt and rudeness towards her was the reason for her reciprocal disdain for him. In this book his perception of her changes rather abruptly. Other than that quick about-face, the plot twists were well-handled. Rast's character is redeemed in this book, and you will be rooting for Nadiah and him to overcome all the obstacles in their path so they can be together.

This is, hands down, my favorite book so far in this series. And I’ll tell you why. As mentioned in some of the less favorable reviews, the other Kindred brides were flawed and weak, having to overcome their own issues before they accepted the bonding with their Kindred males. There was a lot of drama, see-sawing back and forth, which makes a good story, but can be a bit drawn out, like with Lauren and Xairn. But, with Nadiah and Rast, it was the total opposite. Rast was the person that had issues to overcome.We were introduced to Rast in Found, and he wasn’t a very likable character. But, we knew there was more to him than met the eye. He was, after all, a Kindred, he just didn’t realize it. It’s his past and what type of Kindred he is that takes up down this fun story line. Once I understood his background, the loss of his dear, older sister, and how his mother and father perceived him, I couldn’t help but feel for the poor guy.Nadiah, on the other hand, is a great strong female lead. Though young, she knew she always wanted to be bonded with a Kindred Warrior. But her pure blood Tranq Primd parents had other plans. When she was barely a baby, she was blood bonded to another pure blood Tranq Prime male, Y’dex. Y’dex is a cruel, evil man, who you’ll love to hate. He only sees Nadiah as a possession, someone he can torture through the blood bond their parents established between them. The only way Nadiah can break the blood bond is if a Kindred warrior challenges Y’dew. Even though everyone thought Rast was Human, and not Kindred, he accepted the challenge, and him and Nadiah went to Traq Prim to challenge Y’dex. This is my favorite part of the book.Because it was Rast going through the inner turmoil’s, I feel we get to know him better than any of the other Kindred warriors. Even Xairn. I feel Nadiah and Rast make the best couple, so far, out of all the ones we’ve been introduced to at this point.My only complaint, which I mentioned before, is all the proofreading errors. At this time I’ve already read book 6, and Evangeline did finally hire a better editor, but there are still problems in book 6. So, sadly, I’m going to have to bump my review down to 4 feathers.If you’re looking for a long alien romance series, you need to give the Kindred Brides a try. I highly recommend it.

Nadiah, finally we meet a bride who isn't from Earth! I love Nadiah, she's sweet, kind and a little innocent. And she has the sight, which has been showing her the man of her dreams. He just doesn't happen to be the one her overbearing mother has chosen and bonded her too already. He's a not so quiet Earth man who's main goal in life is to find the lost and get them home again.Nadiah thinks he's Kindred, he's built like one, so when she's asked to give him the luck kiss at Sylvan and Sophia's wedding she's sure he's who she's been seeing. (Sought).And when the blood bond her mother forced on her when she was five makes her sick, Rast swears to help her escape it. Except that means a challenge, on Tranq Prime with Kindred rules. Nadiah's not sure he'll survive the challenge, but she can't talk him out of it either.Again, Evangeline offers us a glimpse into the Kindred Worlds with this story and I loved it. I love the worldbuilding she's done for this series. And I love the romance building between Rast and Nadiah, even when I wasn't sure they'd be able to be together.When I purchased this book I worried about what I'd find. We've already had three great books where each female protag was paired with one of the different Kindred races. How many ways can claiming a bride go wrong. I was pleasantly surprised by her amazing ability to weave a story that drew me in and made me love Rast even more.
